THE SQUIRE FILES
'Made Of Stone'
(Live versions taken from Blackpool Empress Ballroom gig)
Gretsch or humbucking guitar used. Both pickups active, switch to neck pickup for the guitar solo.
Clean guitar sound for the intro with a touch of chorus. Capo is at 2nd fret so you're playing in the key of E minor (Aeolian mode).
Once the intro is played you want to layer on the reverb for the single strums on those chords during the verse for a big sound.
On the midiverb II Squire uses patch 28 it would seem.
On the 2nd verse the tube screamer is activated for a more distorted strum of the chords.
As the chorus kicks in you want to lose the reverb back to something more slight.
For the first guitar solo, back to the clean sound and big reverb again.
Again on the 4th verse the tube screamer kicks in.
Chorus time again so less reverb required.
Guitar solo - Neck pick up selected and a moderate reverb.
Probably about patch 20 on the midiverb II.
The change to the neck pickup should be coupled with the activation of the lead channel for the big thick sound.
At the end of the guitar solo it's time to step on the flanger for those big swirly sounds.
After an instrumental version of the chorus Squire switches the neck pickup selector back to having both pickups active.
Flanger is active right until the end of the tune, although he switches off the lead channel when he goes to play the outro (which is the same as the intro).
