LIVE VERSION

Performance notes:

This has got to be the best opening tune of all time. When the guitar kicks in there are some lovely smooth swishy sounds that just make you drool! These are created via a combination of Distortion, chorus and flanger. Probably a bit of reverb as well. To create this you would want to use the lead channel of the mesa along with the chorus and flanger pedals. It's really the flanger that gives it the nice warbly touches. You want to play all the strings open at the 12th fret via harmonics with the volume on your guitar at zero and then quickly turn the volume up in a sort of 'swell' all the way to max. Once the sound starts to feedback a bit you can bend the sound about via the tremolo arm.
For the clean sound at the intro you basically switch off the lead channel and flanger. You should then change to your big reverb setting for the jangly bit. The tube screamer returns for the main guitar riffs to blow the roof off! For the chorus parts Squire would flick the pickup switch so that just the neck pickup is active. This gives a beautifully thick lead tone which will give even your bass player a rumble over his side of the stage! For the quiet bit (middle 8) you want to lose the tube screamer again and revert back to a smaller reverb for the rest of the tune and then kick back in again with the tube screamer.
