The Noise on Xfm (104.9 Xfm) - Sunday 4th August 2002

This is a transcript from Xfm's The Noise, their Sunday show (8 - 12 am) which details the week's news.

This was the third time that This Is The Daybreak's interview with Simon Dawson was mentioned live on Xfm within the space of 48 hours. It was mentioned live as a leading story on the 10am news on Friday and 1pm news that same day.

Thanks to Matt Everitt, the Music News Editor of Xfm, for his very kind comments about the site.

Paul Anderson: London's 104.9 Xfm. This is The Noise here on Sunday. If you're new to The Noise, here is the voice behind the man who is the online news of Xfm, Matt Averitt... Matt Everitt !!

Matt Everitt: Ha ha ha ha !!

Paul: I've worked with him for how long now and I still can't get his name right ! Matt Everitt from Xfm online news. Matt, welcome to a Sunday morning.

Matt: Thank you very much.

Paul: You're looking surprisingly good for a man who's first time it is out on a Sunday morning, this time of day.

Matt: It's not bad. I'm just about dealing with it, I'm just about dealing with it. It's nice just not to be staring at a computer monitor and actually getting out.

Paul: Yeah I can believe that. So you're gonna be coming in and telling us about the big online news stories of the week and also some other bits and pieces that you've been doing with your time. What's the big story of the week then ?

Matt: Well, the big thing is that hordes of fans, hordes of Stone Roses fans are gonna be excited, on the edge of their seats again, as news of the definitive Stone Roses Greatest Hits has actually hit the Xfm news desk. It's not surprising that all the Stone Roses stuff has been reissued again and again in various forms, but speaking to Silvertone, their old record label, they said it should be the final version. There's gonna be stuff there, remastered, repackaged. John Squire, the guitarist who did all the original artwork for the Stone Roses albums is doing new artwork for this. They've got all the original studio bods back together to remaster it.

No sign as to what actually is gonna be on this album as of yet. We do know that Fools Gold in its entirety, the 4 days 18 hrs version of it, is gonna be on there, which is a bit of a collectors item so that's kinda like special. But the most important thing for all Roses fans is that all four members of the band are actually talking to each other, about the running order, about what's gonna go on there, which is a rarity considering the fact they couldn't even speak to each other.

Paul: Absolutely. And they certainly don't like talking about the old days, do they ? Now they're gonna have to trawl over their past and go through the audio version of a photo album aren't they ?

Matt: There have been rumours about them reforming, which is helped along by the news of Ian Brown appearing on the new U.N.K.L.E. album. And also, Mani, the Stone Roses bassist, has also done some work with James Lavelle, though we don't know whether he's gonna be on the same tracks (as Ian). And if he is, that's kinda special.

Paul: I think, I think, y'know a lot of people are gonna think that we can have an Ian Brown solo project, we can have Mani in the Primal Scream team and we can also have Stone Roses on tour for a year. What do you reckon ?

Matt: Well, a lot of people want it.

Paul: I want it !

Matt: Ha ha ha ! You always get this feeling that they're kind of narked that they're not really the biggest band in the world which is what they could've been. And they blew it.

Paul: I think, I think, it's unfinished business. That's what I think.

Matt: Yeah.

Paul: I mean, there were loads and loads of stories that they're gonna get together for a one off tour in the UK for the cash. 'Cos Reni's made no money, Mani's doing alright but Ian Brown apparently hasn't made much out of it either. John Squire, I suppose he gets lots of different types of royalties from all the various artworks that go with it. But let's face it, The Seahorses was a non-starter. So y'know they didn't really make much money out of it, so the UK tour would actually earn them a bit of dosh. But I just think they still see it as unfinished business.

Matt: Yeah, I mean going back to the cash thing. I know for a fact that..... how many albums did that debut sell ? Must be millions and I know they got nothing for it. That's really gotta grate.

Paul: Yeah, it's got to. Have we got a release date for this ?

Matt: Well it looks as if it's gonna be late October….. But on a similar track, Stone Roses guitarist John Squire has finished recording his own solo album.

This was found out on a rather splendid Roses fansite called http://www.thisisthedaybreak.co.uk. It's a fantastic source for all things Roses based.

And Simon Dawson, who's the engineer that worked with the Roses on pretty much everything from Fools Gold to the end revealed on an interview there that there is a new album done by John. He is doing the vocals on it, which he never before did with the Seahorses and that should be out later this year. So maybe that scuppers the plans for the Roses coming up or maybe it's just him getting it out, and going with the Roses reunion.

Paul: Absolutely yeah. So there's two new artwork commissions for him there. There's the Roses and his own album, presumably.

Matt: So that should be interesting to hear what it's gonna be. What it's gonna sound like.

Paul: I can't wait, I can't wait. So, good news. I tell you what we'll do, we'll just take a break there and we'll play some classic Stone Roses.

Plays Begging You.
