1999

She likes to rise early in the morning
She does her best to blow the cobwebs away
And if it's still light maybe she'll skip breakfast
Hope that someone can throw
a little stardust her way, yeah

Crossing the room the day after
the night before nightmare
Pink blue eyes drink in the aftermath
The world's her oyster, anything she chooses
This little girl doesn't know where
her shoes is, yeah

Sixteen sweet Chablis sham kisses
Seventeen nothings whispered in her ear
Eighteen attempts on her best pair of knickers
Nineteen-ninety-nine was a hell of a year

She likes to rise early in the morning
She does her best to blow the cobwebs away
And if it's still light maybe she'll skip breakfast
Hope that someone can throw
a little stardust her way, yeah

That must have been a night to remember
Shame she forgot

Details:
This track went by the title '1996' in its early incarnation, but 6 became 9. 1996 was indeed, a hell of a year for The Stone Roses, an annus horribilis, as they stumbled from one calamity to the next, in a desperate effort to prove that they still had it, despite losing the soul (Reni) and brains (Squire) of the operation. The band had lost the magic dust of their youth, and following total disintegration in late 1996, John Squire was first out of the blocks, with 1997's Do It Yourself. Ian Brown had yet to find his feet with a solo career - he would not be open for business until February 1998. But this is a marathon, remember, not a sprint. Given the mutual apprectaion of 'shoes' (songs) developing between John Squire and Noel Gallagher at this time (decoded here), the little girl struggling to find her 'shoes' here, is most probably Ian Brown. The languishing former Stone Roses frontman was, at this point, still without shoes (the desultory ensemble that took to the Reading stage in August 1996 were still trading on Squire's songbook, struggling to 'kick off a dead man's shoes'). In this context, 'stardust' equates to inspiration; Ian, blazing a trail with his solo career, soon discovers that he is made of the stuff, hitting supernova heights that Squire could not have imagined. I star.
