SINGLE OF THE FORTNIGHT

STONE ROSES: One Love (Silvertone)

Not before time, eh? It seemed like the Roses were "in the studio" "remixing" this new single for about 20 years. In the meantime we had to make do with groups like the Inspiral Carpets and The Charlatans. Of course, there is a danger, when reviewing a Stone Roses single, of letting their immense reputation guide you rather than the true quality of their record - let's be honest, the Roses could play "Agadoo" on a tin whistle and an old biscuit barrel and enough people would say it was brilliant to make it a hit. But fear not! "One Love" is indeed the dope with the scope (Aherm). Genuinely worth waiting for. And, interestingly enough, it's just the sort of song that clearly demonstrates just why the Roses are head and shoulders above groups like The Charlatans and the Carpets. It has tons of atmosphere, superbly 'mazin musical at-oneness, brilliant guitars, a proper tune and a proper chorus and a singer that sings with real charisma as opposed to mumbling infrequently into his fringe and looking non-committal. But most of all it's got vibes - big huge, trippy, nice endearing, exciting, enticing, lovely, lovely vibes.
