SINGLE OF THE WEEK
STONE ROSES: Made Of Stone (Silvertone)

While lacking the exuberance and passion of other '89 releases, Stone Roses snatch first spot with this ridiculously flawless artefact. Addictive rather than explosive, 'Made Of Stone' sees the Mancunian monkeys become macabre Monkees, dreamers haunted by their own shadows.

A succinct, sensitive marriage of vacant vocals and effortless jangles, extra attraction lies in a perky Pink Floyd axe solo; the mind-expanding kind which shimmies and shallies before diving through a distortion pedal. "Are you all alone, are you made of stone?" is the final, painful unanswered question.

Irrevocable proof that everything's coming up Stone Roses. And about time, too.
