Beautiful Thing

There was no crucifixion
Just lies to steal your mind
Now I know that you're thinking
That I'm running out of time

Sister must've missed ya
I don't wanna steal your shine
There's method to my madness
Yes there's reason to my rhyme

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

So soul sucking vampire
How you love to steal the vibe
All wrapped up in your addiction
So we'll have to say bye bye

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

Oh, you're so hip, it's our rules on our trip
Oh, you're so hip, it's our rules on our trip

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

Possess your own reflection, you keep it in a safe
Use a secret combination, to navel gaze all day

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

Yeah you say you love John Lennon, you don't want the world as one
By all means necessary, yes I have to sing my song

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

Oh, you're so hip, it's our rules on our trip
Oh, you're so hip, it's our rules on our trip

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

It's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing that I say bye bye
Hear me, it's a beautiful thing so I stay so high

Hear me it's a beautiful thing
Hear me it's a beautiful thing
Hear me it's a beautiful thing
Hear me it's a beautiful thing
Hear me it's a beautiful thing

A low-slung effort at picking up where Fool's Gold left off, but this is not the funky undercarriage of 1990. We have several Roses touchstones: shimmering guitars played through a wah-wah pedal over a breakbeat, vocals submerged with reversed reverb, backmasking (in this case, All For One). What we don't have is the cohesion or innovation of its benchmark. For all the nods to the Silvertone catalogue, the end product has the hallmark of a latter-day Ian Brown solo track rather than the Roses in their imperial phase. That rehashed Islamic twaddle regarding the crucifixion was tiresome the first time around, while the allusion to Lennon's Imagine is frighteningly close to Dom Johnson's opening couplet on Equality Street. Brown's vocal floats effortlessly across the beat yet is grounded by a rhythm section production that is all too 'Madchester' in places. The track's length - seven minutes - raised hopes of a Fool's Gold template but here, the hook is the chorus (one which outstays its welcome beyond the four-minute mark).

A marked improvement on its reputation-shredding predecessor, but lacking the stardust of the band's peak.

Beautiful Thing cover.
