Mani
The name of the Rose
What music are you currently grooving to ?
The last record I bought was the Stone Roses remix album. I like what they did to Elizabeth My Dear and Elephant Stone, which sounds like us locked in a lift with John Barry. Nobody ever seemed to remix the Roses that well. (Paul) Oakenfold had a good go but most of it is really sad. I'm still getting a buzz off the Death In Vegas album a year on, and I can't wait for the new Beta Band thing. That should be interesting.
What, if push comes to shove, is your all-time favourite album ?
It would have to be Joy Division's Unknown Pleasures. It just reminds me of wanting to be in a band. The Clash's first album had the same effect. When (Primal) Scream played with Strummer in Australia we had our own club - the Mani And Joe Dawn Club. We'd stay up together, get shit-faced and watch the dawn come up. Magic !
What was the first record you ever bought ? And where did you buy it ?
The first record I bought was The Jean Genie by David Bowie. Can't remember where from as I was a little brat. But when I was a real little brat the first records I ever owned were the Camberwick Green and Trumpton albums. Windy Miller was my favourite, and the videos of Chigley and Trumpton are a Scream tour-bus must. They soothe the savage beast that is the Scream.
Which musician, other than yourself, have you ever wanted to be ?
Jimi Hendrix - he transcended the mere playing of an instrument. He was the coolest on the planet. I'd have played guitar with every part of my body if I were Jimi.
What do you sing in the shower ?
I try not to with my rich, chocolatey baritone voice, but it would have to be Barry White if I did.
What is your favourite Saturday night record ?
Sly And The Family Stone's Family Affair, anything by Funkadelic, One Nation Under A Groove.
And your Sunday morning record ?
Sigur Ros. It's just mental, ethereal, slow and dreamy just the way I am on a Sunday morning. I take hours to come round and that fits the pace perfectly. Get the lights off, roll up a big, fat spliff and lie back and enjoy.
