I recently spoke to British composer and arranger Simon Hale, via email. Simon worked on Ian Brown's 'The World Is Yours' LP and I asked him to describe his approach to the album. His response can be read below. The first 20,000 copies of 'The World is Yours' featured a bonus CD of orchestra-only mixes of Simon's arrangements.
"I worked on 11 songs and added the string, horn, harp and timpani parts on top of what was in existence at the time, whether finished or not. We then recorded the orchestra at Angel studios on two separate occasions as an overdub on top of the track. I would tend to take the same initial approach for each song - listening to how the song is put together, what elements it comprises of; melodic themes, rhythmic hooks, harmonic progression, tempo, groove, overall colour of sound etc, and then build my ideas around that to try to highlight what's going on, add another dimension and twist and give variation in my writing as the song progresses. Having the orchestra-only mixes means that you can hear everything in complete isolation away from the track so that it's really obvious what's gone on at the orchestra sessions."

I am currently making a documentary on The Stone Roses (for a university project). Part four of the documentary looks back at The Stone Roses' 1989 Blackpool Empress Ballroom gig, and features a contribution from journalist JOHN ROBB.

A site visitor named Naoko, from Japan, has sent me some previously unseen photographs from her collection. These three photographs are from October 1989, when The Stone Roses were in Japan for the first time. If you compare the insert photograph from 'The Complete Stone Roses' CD, you can see that these photos are from that same day:
Here also are some scans from a Japanese publication, sent in by Naoko:

Following on from the piece below about John Squire's Jaguar, here is an email I received from Alasdair Pitt:
By way of follow-up to your piece on the origins of John Squire's Jaguar I thought you might enjoy a couple of photos of the 'burst model which I bought when it came up for sale from Music Ground recently. I didn't pay the sticker price but it nevertheless came at some cost to my marriage. As someone who continues to enjoy both the music of the Roses and of Squire's
subsequent incarnations I had to have it.
I have enjoyed your pages (esp. The Squire Files) tremendously. Hope there's something Squire-related to report in 2007!
Best regards,
Alasdair

I received an interesting email from David Greenfield regarding John Squire's Jaguar, which can be read below.
Hi Paul
I thought you might be interested in this.
I’ve been looking for a Jaguar body as a restoration project I’m starting with a mate. I tracked one down at Music Ground in Leeds; the condition is not great and it has had a re-finish but what clinched it for me was that it used to belong to John Squire. The body was from the original Jag that John took to Stuart Palmer when he was working at Music Ground; everything was removed to create the custom guitar that John used and you have a fantastic replica of. Anyway, the old body gathered dust in the workshop and hopefully it will be returned to a playable condition in the future.
I’ve attached a couple of pictures including the plate that Stuart signed for John but for some reason never gave it to him.
Cheers
David

This event is about living life to the full while raising awareness of the misunderstood illness M.E./CFS; this affects 250,000 people in the UK, 25,000 of which are children and young people.
Myalgic Encephalopathy
Dedicated night clubber, Jo Williams lost her life to breast cancer at the tender age of 37 after also being bed-bound for 12 years with severe M.E.: Myalgic Encephalopathy also known as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.
The big event will be a celebration of her short but music-filled life. It will also raise money for the Association of Young People with M.E., the charity that helped Jo understand what was happening to her body when she was struck with excruciating pains in her muscles and head, couldn’t stand daylight or to be touched, was plagued with memory and concentration problems and eventually became bed-bound.
The charity helped Jo get help from disbelieving doctors and welfare benefits staff.

Breaking news regarding Ian Brown's latest venture has been posted on the TITD Forum by a site visitor from Russia:
"I was stuck in a traffic jam on the way to work in St. Petersburg, Russia, and suddenly Mr Brown gets a live interview on a Russian breakfast radio show. Barely anyone's heard of him or the Stone Roses in Russia, so it was a bit of a shock. He's in Moscow working on the soundtrack for a film called Paragraf 78."
The Stone Roses are on the cover of this month's Uncut magazine. In lengthy interviews with each of the four Roses, they talk about the highs and lows of the band and the chances of them ever getting back together.
An interesting article from The Tablet newspaper (28th January 2006) has been added to the Media section.
Memorabilia sent in by John Deafley has been added to the site:
A new section, Quotes Database, has been added to the site.
A new John Squire wallpaper has been sent in for my Wallpaper section by Liam Dominguez, a Stone Roses fan from Mexico City. If anyone has any wallpapers that they would like to send in, please email them to me at Paul@Thisisthedaybreak.co.uk

Andy Watts has launched a brand new website, http://www.andywattsmusic.co.uk. The features of the site include latest news, live dates, gallery and a selection of his songs. Available to download (for a limited time) is his brand new track 'Rhapsody Of Light', which Andy was commissioned to write by an independent producer for a Radio 4 documentary celebrating the 30th anniversary of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.
TITD was lucky enough to receive an excellent limited edition CD through the official Andy Watts site. It consists of the following 9 tracks, recorded over the summer period:
1. myowntime
Some are solo, others feature Andy's musical friend Roger Goslyn, accompanying on flute, accordion, trumpet and trombone. Here is a review from freelance journalist Alan Jeff:
Imagine drinking cool pure water from a remote mountain spring on a
scorching hot day and you’re someway to understanding the delicate flavour of Andy Watts’ music. Heart-spun lyrics and a brittle vocal delivery conjure an innocence made all the more inviting by the understated accompaniment.
Rhapsody of light, is a beguiling trip back in time to Andy’s childhood
and his discovery of the magic of Queen and their signature tune, deft
work on the acoustic guitar alongside lilting harmonies brings warmth to
the bitter sweet lyrics lamenting the passing of those days. With My Own
Time the marriage of Watts’ distinctive vocals to the mournful strains of brass, offers a natural earthy balance that seems somehow teased into
place by the ever-present acoustic guitar.
The weather worn sentiment of No Father Found can’t easily be missed but
the warmth of feeling offered by both the vocal delivery and the use of
the accordion, bring an upbeat catchy counter balance to the emotion
behind the lyrics. Sun Cries in The Sky comes with clever lyrics and that simple, stripped delivery that is the signature of all Andy Watts’
acoustic work. It’s a tune that weaves a feel-good factor out of thin air and wraps you up like a blanket on a lazy winters morn.
Born of the Stars carries on the theme, fragile, intelligent and
understated guitar work creates an honest, down to earth feel, for a song that seems to drift along as if on the breeze.
All in all Watts seems to grow with each new track he brings to the table and the enjoyment he seems to be taking in his craft these days not only stands out but is woven like a thread through all of his more recent work.
There will be a major London exhibition, 'Nirvana - with the lights out', of photographer Ian Tilton's work with Nirvana. The exhibition runs from 27th October to 17th November 2005. See this press release (pdf) for details.
I am currently working on a '1997 to 2006' chronology to accompany the '1984 - 1996' chronology. Click here to go to the Chronology section.
